For many years, I had piles and piles of goals that I’d set at the start of each year. Everything was categorized and I had benchmarks and it was a whole process. And while it worked for a few years, it got to be very exhausting.
Especially with lots of little kids and unpredictability, it stopped being a helpful framework for me. And I’m a firm believer that if something isn’t helping my life and is just causing guilt, there’s a problem with the thing, not with me. So I quickly eliminated that.
Then for a few years after, I set ONE goal at the start of the year. And it was great! It was often something really simple – one year, it was to floss my teeth regularly (yes, I needed the reminder). It was a nice way to work on a habit I really did want to develop without feeling overwhelmed by a bunch of others.
This year, I’m feeling like I’d like a few reminders to consider and work toward over the year. Here are some of my personal goals in 2022!
MY 2022 GOALS
- Be in bed by 11pm. I’ve tried 10 or 10:30 before, which I’d love. But it didn’t feel doable for me. But I truly need to get better about sleep, so this is one of my main priorities for the coming year.
- Grow the LPF community. This business has been one of the biggest surprises of the last couple of years. I truly never imagined this could become a real job for me, one that I’m passionate about and that also cares for my family. It’s given me so many opportunities and joys, and I want to funnel that back into making this a place of connection, education, and growth for more families.
- Visit my 50th US state. Dan and I have hoped to visit Alaska for several years now, but have gotten derailed a number of times. We’re really hoping this is the year we can make it happen!
- Read all the Global Children’s Book Club books with my kids. The thing with putting together a whole program like this is sometimes I get so caught up in the creation process that I slow down on actually doing it with my own kids! I’m determined to have each of the books accessible and be diligent in reading and discussing them in our own home.
- Make a 2014 and 2021 photo book. I’m rather behind on photo book making, so I’m hoping to do the most recent year as well as a past year. This is one goal I’m hoping to have finished in time for Valentine’s Day for Dan!
- Visit an escape room. I’ve wanted to do one of these for years and years so it’s time to finally make it happen! I think it would be great either as a family or on a group date.
- Take each of my kids on an overnight trip. Dan and I have been talking about this one for a while, and we feel overdue on making it happen. We have a plan for bigger trips with our older kiddos, but I’d love to take each of my kids on just a short, nearby overnight for some time together.
- Have no-phone/laptop hours from 3-7 and after 10pm. I’m hoping this time allows me to spend time with my kids and also do some more reading, which severely dipped this past year.
- Finish eating at all the 2 & 3 Michelin star restaurants in the Bay Area. Yes, this is 100% a very privileged goal. But we’re big foodies and while I blanch at the thought of choosing an $8 pumpkin instead of a $5 pumpkin at the patch, I really love terrific food. This is a fun one that I’m really looking forward to.
- Get back to planning weekly Wednesday adventures. My kids get out of school early on Wednesdays, and I used to be really good about planning a hike, new playground, or some other fun activity. I’d love to get back to that!
There are three other big goals that I’m especially excited for, but that I can’t share quite yet. I hate teasers like that, but I’m mentioning it because YOU all have been a big part of them and a big part of our lives over the last couple of years. I’m truly grateful for this space and this community, and how you help me stretch, learn, grow, and create. I appreciate every one of you and your support – thank you for being here. I can’t wait to continue to build this space in 2022!
