Join us as we read and discuss Juneteenth books for kids, and learn about this special holiday honoring Black freedom in the United States.
While thinking about the Global Children’s Book Club, I thought of doing a special focus on Black women and men in our home country, the United States. I considered doing it on July 4th, our Independence Day, to honor Black contributions to our nation. However, after speaking with several Black friends and colleagues, all advised focusing on Juneteenth books for kids instead.
While I’m ashamed I didn’t think of it sooner, I’m grateful for those who are willing to help me learn, too. And I’m really delighted by the assortment of Juneteenth books that are out there.
If you’re not familiar with Juneteenth, it’s an American holiday that we celebrate on June 19th. While the Emancipation Proclamation had been given a couple of years prior in 1863, June 19, 1865 was the day it was read to slaves in Texas. Texas hadn’t yet been claimed by the Union army, and slavery had continued in full force until this time. While slavery continued to some extent after, as well, this was marked as the day of official freedom and liberation for Blacks in the United States. It’s an extremely important day and one we should all support and celebrate.
Here’s the info for the book I’ve chosen for the Juneteenth day during the Global Children’s Book Club, as well as some other fantastic Juneteenth books for kids!
