We’ve used a LOT of sunscreen this summer. Between walking around in lots of cities in the heat right near the equator to being out on the water a ton in pools and the ocean, I’ve tried to be serious about sun protection for myself and for my kids.
Here are the 3 sunscreens that I keep coming back to repeatedly. Most importantly, they all protect really well and have prevented any burns for all of us, from my Indian-skinned self to Dan’s very white skin. Each of them is mineral-based, which I prefer especially for my kids’ skin and also because it’s better for oceans and reefs. They’re all easy to apply, go on smoothly, and rub in well without a white cast. Since 7/8 of us have darker skin, this is especially important to me, and I love that these all fit the bill.
These are our favorite!
Kinfield Sunglow Mineral Face Sunscreen (code LPF 15 for 15% off)
This is my personal favorite facial sunscreen for me, especially for darker facial skin (though it works great on lighter skin, too). It protects so well and has the absolute prettiest pinky glowy sheen. It’s not shimmery at all but gives an overall rosy glow while protecting skin. I’m obsessed with it and it’s the best everyday facial sunscreen, especially if I’m wearing it under makeup. I also used it on my kiddos’ faces and it works great!
You can use the code LPF15 to get 15% off your order.
(S)undercover Mineral Face Sunscreen
This has become my new favorite facial sunscreen for kids. I love that the tip has a little applicator that makes it easy to drizzle a bit on faces and it rubs in soooo smoothly – critical when applying to kids. I’ve loved this brand for kids sunscreen for years so it doesn’t surprise me that they hit it out of the park with this one. My kids specifically request this one!
SPF 50 Mineral Sunscreen
This has been our go-to kids’ sunscreen for the past 5 or so years. It’s the best and is the one I use for everyone’s bodies. It goes on smoothly and easily, protects well, and is made with clean ingredients perfect for sensitive skin, even babies. I love that it’s creamy and doesn’t leave a cast while is also really gentle on my kiddos’ skin. Love this stuff!
There you have it – our favorite sunscreens we’ve used extensively for our family this summer. Do you have any favorites? I’d love to hear!

Dear author,
I just wanted to say that I really enjoyed your article. As someone who has spent a lot of time outdoors this summer, I have also been very conscious about sun protection for myself and my family. I appreciate that all three of your recommended sunscreens offer great protection and have prevented any burns for everyone, regardless of skin type. I especially like that they are all mineral-based, as this is not only better for our skin, but also for the environment. It’s also great to know that they are easy to apply and don’t leave a white cast, which is especially important for those of us with darker skin.
I’m particularly interested in trying the Kinfield Sunglow Mineral Face Sunscreen. The fact that it provides a pinky glow while protecting the skin sounds amazing, and I love that it works well for both adults and kids. The (S)undercover Mineral Face Sunscreen also sounds fantastic, with its easy applicator and smooth application. And of course, the SPF 50 Mineral Sunscreen seems like a reliable and safe choice for the whole family.
Thank you for sharing your recommendations and providing us with these options. I will definitely be considering them for our future travels. If you have any other suggestions or favorite products, I would love to hear them!
Best regards, Tony V.
